Hometown heroes shop with local children

Posted: Updated:

It's the season of giving, and on Wednesday, some of the Tri-State's hometown heroes put some action behind those words.

The program is called "Shop with a Hero."

More than 90 children met at the Meijer store in Milford to participate. They then paired up with a member of the Milford School District's D.A.R.E. program and the Miami Twp. police department and scoured the store for the best gift for mom, dad and other loved ones. The children were each given $100 to shop with, but they had to spend it on their relatives. They were then given $20 to buy something for themselves.

It's all made possible by members of the community who donated more than $13,000 for the event.

This is the 10th year for the program. The children are chosen by D.A.R.E. officers in the Milford School District. This year's group is believed to be one of the largest in the Tri-state.
