The UC football team could have its starting quarterback back for the Liberty Bowl on New Year's Eve.
Zach Collaros, who broke his ankle five-weeks-ago against West Virginia, practiced with the starters on Monday. He threw passes and practiced a couple of designed quarterback runs. He is still favoring the surgically repaired ankle, but said if the bowl game were tomorrow, he'd be ready.
"Our training staff is the best in the country," said Collaros. "And, I've been blessed with some pretty good genetics."
Collaros says he spends "7 to 8 hours" in the training room every day and kept his throwing arm sharp by throwing footballs in the locker room and the pool. He admits there is pain after rehab, but says that's just part of football.
"If I injure it again, I injure it again. You know, what do you got to lose?"
Head coach Butch Jones confirmed Monday the school will soon announce a contract extension that will keep him in Cincinnati through 2017.
"We're close to finalizing some things," Jones said. "I think in the next couple days we'll be able to announce something."
