Police looking for suspect who stole Christmas gifts from car

NEWPORT, KY (FOX19) - Newport Police are asking for the public's help in identifying a suspect who stole Christmas presents out of a car.

Investigators say the suspect observed the victim, John Knauer, purchase a Playstation 2, controller, memory card and several games from the Game Stop in the Newport Shopping Center.

Knauer walked to Walgreens to meet his girlfriend and kids, and left the bag from Game Stop in his car.

The suspect pulled into the parking lot at the same time the victim was walking from the store. Both the suspect and the victim walk into Walgreens, but when the suspect comes out, he goes to the car he was riding in for a moment, then goes to the victim's car. He opened the unlocked door, removed the bag, and jumped in the waiting vehicle.

Knauer says the Playstation was meant as a special Christmas present for his fiance's kids.

"Disappointment in myself really for not locking the doors and mad because that was the Christmas that me and my fiance was wanting to get for the kids....that was the main present for them and somebody took it from us," he said.

Newport police have released a surveillance photo of the thief. Knauer's ordeal is a reminder that holiday shoppers need to be on their guard.

"Once you make your purchases and bring them back to your car don't put them in the back seat or the front seat that's just inviting someone to smash your window out and steal them," said Cincinnati police Sgt. Eric Franz. "You should ideally make your purchases and leave, but if you have to come back to the car, put them in the trunk."

Anyone who can identify the suspect should call Crimestoppers at 513-352-3040.
