OSHP stepping up patrols for holiday weekend

HAMILTON, OH (FOX19) -- With millions of drivers on the road this holiday weekend, Ohio State Highway Patrol is stepping up their enforcement for the holidays, on high alert for drunk drivers.

"We have increased our patrol officers out for this holiday weekend," said Sgt. Paul Lezotte of the OSHP Hamilton Post. "Looking for the cars weaving, following too close or excessive speeds, mainly to remove the impaired drivers off the roadway and to make the roadway safer for everyone traveling through Christmas."

Sgt. Lezotte says with Christmas falling on a weekend this year, there may be more of a likelihood for drivers who have had one too many, getting behind the wheel.
"We expect there to possibly be more drinking this weekend, with Christmas falling on the weekend, get a designated driver," Lezotte said.
And officers remind drivers that distracted driving can be just as detrimental as drinking and driving.
"Texting, you're not focusing on the road, you're looking down, pressing the buttons, if you need to make an emergency phone call pull over," Lezotte said.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol Reports a record low of fatal crashes this year, and they want it to stay that way.
"We're really hoping we can keep the number down, under 1,000 is our goal for this year, and we only have a little over a week left, and so we're asking the public to help out," Lezotte said.
