Reopening date for Clifton IGA store still unknown

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

The old Keller's IGA store in Clifton has been called a staple of the community, but renovation work is still far from complete.

Mark Goessling, whose family took over the store last year, says they've run into some construction issues during the $1.2 million renovation.  He says they should have a good idea of when the store will reopen in about two weeks.

In the meantime, the lack of a neighborhood grocery store is frustrating to many local residents.

Iris Harmrick has lived in the area for 52 years.

"People are just grieving because they don't have a grocery store," said Harmrick. "I have so many friends that don't drive, and people that gave up their cars, and they would walk over and get their groceries and those of us that have to drive have to go a long way."

Ines Schrottenbaum says she misses the convenience.

"It's upsetting," she said. "I hoped that when I come back from holiday that it would be open and we could go back to normal business, but we're still driving the car."

"It's kind of upsetting because we wanted to be able to walk and get groceries and not drive," said Kaitlin Saltzman.

Bob Doll, owner of the Proud Rooster restaurant in Clifton, says having a neighborhood grocer helps his business.

"A lot of people would come in and eat before they shop because you don't want to go with an empty stomach. So you miss a lot of these customers you don't see anymore," he said.

The Goessling family says they're as anxious as anyone to see the store reopen and plan to hire up to 140 employees to work there.
