AKRON, OH (WOIO) -
Testimony began just after noon Monday in the corruption trial of former Cuyahoga County Commissioner Jimmy Dimora.
The late start was planned as Judge Sarah Lioi has conducted shorter than normal days every other Monday to allow Jurors to catch up on personal matters.
Kim Jaworski, a personnel manger for Bedford Municipal Court, testified that she signed off on the hiring of Gina Meuti Coppers, a woman who had an affair with Dimora in an attempt to get a public job. Her testimony lasted only about 5 minutes.
Shawn Newman, an executive with Letter Perfect Design Group, testified that he won a contract with DAS Construction to rebuild lockers at Cleveland Browns Stadium after a flood there. He was not fully paid and filed suit.
The case was heard by Judge Bridget McCafferty. McCafferty was later convicted of making decisions that forced a settlement agreement that was not favorable to Letter Perfect. This occurred after McCafferty was contacted by Commissioner Dimora and urged to rule favorably toward DAS. She was heard on wiretaps at her own trial talking to Pumper saying she tried to get the settlement amount even lower but hoped what she did for him was OK. Newman testified that he felt the judge was going to rule against him so agreed to an amount he felt was unfair in fear of her deciding on an even lower number.
