Fundraising underway for 9/11 memorial in Kenton County

CRESCENT SPRINGS, KY (FOX19) -

The Crescent Springs/Villa Hills Fire Department in Kenton County has managed to get a piece of steel recovered from the wreckage of the World Trade Center disaster.

The 250 pound piece of steel will become part of a memorial honoring those who lost their lives back on September 11, 2001.

Crescent Springs City Councilman Lou Hartfield says the memorial is built so that generations to come will always be reminded of the tragedy.

"People tend to forget about things unless you have something as reminder that people can reflect on," he said.

Fire Chief Jeff Wendt says the plan is to have a memorial the public can interact with.

"We want everybody to be able to touch the memorial," he said. "We don't want it to be one of those memorials where you just see the steel. We want you to be able to physically touch a piece of history."

Wendt says the Crescent Spring/Villa Hills Fire Department was among about 1,000 fire departments selected to receive a piece of steel out of more than 10,000 applicants. Wendt says the process wasn't easy.

"Almost three years to get approved and a whole lot of paperwork...probably a stack about an inch thick," he said.

Councilman Hartfield says they've raised about $10,000 so far, but need $150,000 to build the memorial. Hartfield says a number of fundraising events are planned, including a comedy night at Northern Kentucky University.

"No money is too little," says Wendt. "All the Walgreens have drop boxes in them. We'll take a dollar, we'll take a hundred."

The memorial will be built in Crescent Springs community park and a dedication is planned for September 11, 2012.
