New reward, hope in case of murdered Nashville women

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

One of Nashville's most horrific unsolved murders is getting a big boost in reward money offered for information.

In February 1996, two young college women were working at an exotic tanning business when someone came in and stabbed them both more than 100 times.

The fire department had arrived first to the scene at Exotic Tan on Church Street, because they thought it might have been a fire. But the crime scene was contaminated by too many footprints.

Sixteen years later, there is new hope for closure.

Melissa Chilton and Tiffany Campbell were stabbed by the bayonet off a military rifle at least 100 times.

On the 10th anniversary of the murders, the two families offered a $10,000 reward. It was money the working class families couldn't afford, but it had been 10 years and they couldn't stand it.

"I want justice. I want it swiftly. I don't want to wait another 10 years," said mother Gail Chilton in a previous Channel 4 interview.

Now, another six years have passed, so there is a new incentive. A $70,000 reward is now being offered for information that leads to the conviction of the killer of Melissa Chilton and Campbell.

"This man or this person could not have gone 16 years and kept this to himself. That didn't happen. I think it's money-driven. And I hope that's what brings them out," said Campbell's mother, Deborah Edmonds.

Cold case specialist Sgt. Pat Postiglione says this old case now has new life.

"We have some suspects, and the circle of suspects is a lot smaller than when we started," Postiglione said. "There are a lot of cases I don't feel as good as this case, and I do believe we will have some closure in the very near future."

The victims were two young girls desperately loved by their two mothers and still desperately missed.

"It doesn't go away. It feels like it was just yesterday. I remember where I was, everything that was said just like yesterday. Our whole family grieves over this," Edmonds said.
