OXFORD, OH (FOX19) - The green beer is flowing Thursday in Oxford.

Several bars around the campus of Miami University opened at 5:30 a.m. for Green Beer Day.

Green Beer Day is an annual tradition in Oxford, and is held on the Thursday before spring break. It marks a time for students to celebrate spring and St. Patrick's Day.

Last year, Oxford Police made seven arrests and issued five citations on Green Beer Day. They said last year's event was tamer than in years past. In 2010, over 40 citations were issued.

Oxford Police increase patrols on Green Beer Day, and professors are traditionally sent memos saying Green Beer Day is not an excuse for students to miss class.
