COVINGTON, KY (FOX19) -
The Northern Kentucky Area Planning Commission announced Monday that it is waiving permit fees for reconstruction activities associated with the March 2 tornado.
"NKAPC is a service-delivery organization and right now our highest priority is to assist our fellow citizens who sustained damage Friday afternoon," said Dennis Gordon, executive director of NKAPC.
In addition to waving fees for construction, Gordon says NKAPC's inspectors will "do everything possible within the law to facilitate the work that lies ahead." According to state law, all construction and reconstruction activities require a building permit and inspections to assure compliance with Kentucky's mandatory state building code.
NKAPC's building inspectors evaluated 349 structures as part of that effort. They tallied 88 homes as being destroyed and roughly 138 that were affected but still livable.
The agency's GIS mapping staff spent most of Friday night and all day Saturday creating, printing, laminating, and delivering maps to emergency response personnel. These maps show the structures as they existed prior to the storm along with addresses for each property. Storms of this nature generally take rural mail boxes and scatter them across the landscape, making identification of specific addresses difficult, especially when familiar structures no longer exist.
