CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - Iraq war veteran Brad Wenstrup narrowly defeated incumbent Jean Schmidt in the race to be the GOP candidate for Ohio's 2nd District in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Schmidt has held the seat in the House since winning a special election in 2005. After the results were announced, Schmidt released a statement that said, "I want to thank everyone who supported me since I became the first woman elected to represent Southern Ohio in Congress in 2005. I want to thank them for their friendship."
Schmidt also said that he left Wenstrup a voicemail wishing him the best.
Wenstrup was an army combat surgeon who ran an unsuccessful campaign for mayor of Cincinnati against Mark Mallory in 2009. Wenstrup continues his service in the U.S. Army Reserve as a Lieutenant Colonel.
Wenstrup will be facing Democrat William Smith in the race for the House seat.
