Rain brings a rush for residents to install tarps

HENRYVILLE, IN (WAVE) - For those with a roof over their head, shades of blue can be seen across Henryville neighborhoods as homeowners drape their roof in tarps.

Homes still standing are likely covered after hail & debris damage, unless you're by Austin Grosheart's place. "They stay on a lot better than these tarps." He's referring to a new solution to keep his home dry.

Once billboard advertisements you've seen along interstates and high above roadways, the thick waterproof material is now being used by homeowners to prevent their roof from leaking. "I'd prefer the billboard material over any other," he said.

Local disaster relief centers provided residents with free tarps, including the recycled billboard advertisements.  "It's starting to rain. So hopefully it keeps the water out of everyone's homes," Grosheart said.

For those who prefer the more conventional solution, Ace Hardware in Scottsburg ordered an emergency shipment of tarps to meet neighbors' needs. "The need has been great," Larry Beckley said. "This is probably the closest major hardware store to the disaster area. So we've had so many people in here with so many needs," he said.

Free tarps at still available to the public. A distribution site has been set up at the St. Francis Catholic Church located at SR 160 and US 31 in Henryville.
