Impaired driving arrests up 7 percent

The State Highway Patrol says troopers made about 23,700 arrests across Ohio last year on charges of impaired driving.

Numbers release Friday say the amount is an increase of 7 percent over 2010 and part of an ongoing effort to crack down on those who operate a vehicle under the influence.

Of the 2011 arrests, more than one in five included a speed violation; 16 percent included a violation for driving without a valid driver license; and nearly one in eight included a safety belt violation.

There were about 13,800 crashes related to impaired driving, with 401 people killed and about 8,500 injured.

The public is asked to call (hash)677 to report impaired drivers, drug activity or stranded motorists.
