TYLER, TX (KLTV) -
A strong storm system across the Rocky Mountain States will push a slow moving cold front into the areas this evening. Ahead of this cold front showers and thunderstorms will break out across East Texas this afternoon. A few of these storms will become severe with the main threats being very strong winds and large hail. In addition to the wind and hail threat, there is a threat for isolated tornadoes this afternoon and evening, especially along and west of a line from Mt. Pleasant to Tyler to Palestine. In this area the Storm Predication Center has issued a moderate risk of severe weather. Heavy rain will also be likely with any of the storms this afternoon and a flash flood watch has been issued for most of East Texas from a Center to Palestine line north and will probably be extended south to include all of East Texas later this evening.
As for the timing of this event, this morning we can expect scattered showers and thunderstorms to move across the area from time to time. These storms will more than likely remain below severe limits. Later during the afternoon heating scattered thunderstorms will develop across the Hill Country and move northeast towards East Texas. At the same time strong winds aloft out of the west will overspread southeasterly winds at the surface. This will allow any scattered storm to rotate across East Texas from 3PM onward. It is the rotating storms that will have the potential to produce very large hail and strong gusty winds as well as an isolated tornado. Please stay with KLTV and KLTV.com throughout the day for the latest on this developing weather situation. If you have a smart phone and you have not done so yet, please visit you app store to download the latest KLTV7 weather app. Also be sure to like the Facebook pages of Mark Scirto, Grant Dade, and Brett Collar as they will be posting updates throughout the day.
