Vinery Spiral Stakes this weekend at Turfway Park

FLORENCE, KY (FOX19) -

The road to the Kentucky Derby begins this weekend with the Vinery Spiral Stakes at Turfway Park.

Thursday at noon the draw for Saturday's race will take place. Post time is 5:45 p.m.

Last year's winner, Animal Kingdom, took home $285,000.  After winning the Spiral Stakes the Brazilian bred stallion won the Kentucky Derby.

The purse for this year's winner is expected to be just shy of $300,000. The total prize money is $500,000 for Saturday's big race.

Horse racing isn't the only action on Saturday. Three choirs registered for the 2012 World Choir Games will be performing; Northern Kentucky University Vocal Jazz Ensemble, Peace and Serenity, and Lucky Day Quartet. Also brand new this year is the Jacob Leinekugel Mixology Bar. The VIP tent is back with the Miller Lite Zone, Woodford Reserve bar, the Grey Goose bar, NCAA games on televisions and much more.

Gates open at 10 a.m. and racing begins around 1 p.m.
