Heroes Honored: Chardon First Responders recognized by the governor & at home

CHARDON, OH (WOIO) -

It's a moment that no one in Chardon will ever forget -- a community tragedy.
A student opened fire in the high school, killing three students. Two others, survived the attack.

Wednesday the men and women who first responded to Chardon High School, got a special honor from Ohio's governor.

Dozens of school and law enforcement officials gathered at the statehouse to share their stories, and the lessons they learned from that day.

The group met with Governor John Kasich, his cabinet, and Geauga County lawmakers.

"It was a great honor to be in Columbus today -- a little emotional. I am very proud of the people I serve with here the community has been wonderful. It's just very very overwhelming," said Asst. Chief Tom Hummel.

They were recognized in front of the State Senate and House for the job they did under unbelievable pressure. Chardon's principal says it's an honor to meet with the governor, but they all wish it were under different circumstances.

Once they arrived home, hundreds of Chardon residents packed a Walmart parking lot to welcome home dozens of first responders. The return back to the tight knit community was very emotional for many....

"If this is something we can do to show them how much we support them then we'll do whatever it is," said Chris Hummel.

"I can't say enough about the support that we've gotten and all the people in this town have given each other," said Asst. Chief Tom Hummel.

Those who turned out for the heroes welcome in Chardon wanted to continue to show their support for the men and women who put their lives on the line. Their expression of thanks displayed in so many ways.

Through this tragedy standing together their strength continues to pull them through...never forgetting the victims and honoring those who did what they could to keep others safe.

Meantime doctors will be giving a mental evaluation to T.J Lane -- the teen accused in that deadly shooting.

Prosecutors want him tried as an adult. He is due back in court April 9th.
