Student loan debt could cripple economic recovery

WASHINGTON (AP) - An explosion of student loan debt is being seen as a potential threat to the fragile economic recovery.

Surging above $1 trillion, U.S. student loan debt has surpassed credit card and auto-loan debt, possibly setting the stage for a new economic crisis as it increases the burden on taxpayers.

In a still-struggling job market, the loans are tough to pay off.
