A University of Cincinnati music student was killed Saturday afternoon in a crash in Ripley County that involved heavy rain.
According to Indiana State Trooper Matt Holley, at approximately 2:30 this afternoon a 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix driven by 23 year old Mark Wesley Brax, a UC student from Columbia, SC, was eastbound on U.S. 50 just east of the entrance to the Versailles State Park when he lost control in the heavy rain and began to skid sideways. The Grand Prix then skidded into the westbound lane when a westbound 2011 Toyota Highlander driven by 35 year old Donielle R. Stewart of Columbia Township (near Mariemont) struck the Grand Prix broadside on the passenger side causing extensive damage to both vehicles.
Brax was pronounced dead at the scene and Stewart suffered compound fractures to her ankles and as well as leg injuries. Trooper Holley believes Brax was operating his vehicle too fast for the wet road conditions which may have caused him to hydroplane then lose control of his vehicle.
After the crash, dozens and dozens of messages of condolence poured into Wesley Brax' Facebook page from all over the world. Brax was a singer studying at the College-Conservatory of Music at U.C.
The crash remains under investigation. Trooper Holley was assisted at the scene by Ripley County Sheriff's deputies, Rescue 69, Ripley County Medic, and the Ripley County Coroner's Office.
