GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -
Anderson County deputies said an Anderson police officer fired a shot at a car that tried to run over him Wednesday afternoon.
Chad McBride, spokesman for the Anderson County Sheriff's Office, said the police officer was trying to stop a car for a traffic violation. He said the vehicle did not stop, which prompted a low-speed, 10-mile-long pursuit. He said the pursuit traveled into Greenville County and ended at the Grove Station Apartments on Lakeside Drive.
McBride said that when the officer tried to make contact with the driver of the car, the driver turned the car around and tried to run over the officer. He said that was when the officer pulled out his gun and fired a shot at the car.
Neither the driver nor the two passengers were wounded by the shot, McBride said. He said the officer was also unharmed.
McBride said that when the vehicle stopped a second time, one of the passengers fled on foot. He said that passenger was later found by search dogs. He said the driver and the other passenger were also arrested at the scene.
Drugs were found in the vehicle, McBride said.
McBride said the trio faces several charges, including attempted murder, failure to stop for blue lights, resisting arrest, possession of drugs and gun violations.
The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the officer-involved shooting, McBride said.
McBride said the female suspect was 31-year-old Lesley McWhorter, of Seneca. He said she was wanted in Anderson County for failure to stop for blue lights and her speeding ticket.
McWhorter and the male suspect, Walter Goodine, 40, were picked up by Greenville County deputies. McBride said Goodine was not wanted in Anderson County.
Greenville County deputies said they charged Goodine with resisting arrest after he fled on foot, and he was also being held on charges from SLED of attempted murder, manufacturing methamphetamine and possession of marijuana.
McWhorter was also being held on a SLED charge of attempted murder at the Greenville County Detention Center. The third suspect's name has not been released.
