AFGHANISTAN (RNN) – A Black Hawk helicopter that crashed in southern Afghanistan had four American troops on board, a U.S. military official has confirmed.
There was no immediate report of casualties, and the crash is under investigation.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the ongoing investigation, said it could not be ruled out that the Black Hawk helicopter was taken down by enemy fire, according to the Associated Press.
The helicopter was flying in severe weather, and that may have been a factor.
Reuters has reported that the aircraft was a NATO military helicopter that went down in the Regional Command-Southwest area, which includes the Taliban stronghold of Helmand province.
Troops at a combat outpost in the area were waiting to be picked up and saw the crash happen, the official said. Another helicopter flying nearby was not affected.
