Suspect killed by officer on narcotics team
An undercover police officer working on a regional narcotics team shot and killed a man suspected of selling marijuana. It happened today in suburban Cincinnati. Hamilton County Sheriff Simon Leis says 22-year-old Jonathan Crenshaw was shot twice by Agent John Mercado. Leis says the preliminary investigation indicates the shooting was justified. Leis says Crenshaw pointed a gun at Mercado after officers tried to arrest him. Mercado fired at Crenshaw, striking him in the right thigh and chest. Crenshaw was pronounced dead at Bethesda North Hospital. Mercado was investigated by the FBI after the 2001 shooting of beanbags into a crowd of protesters shortly after the funeral of a black man who was shot and killed by a white police officer. Mercado was later cleared at trial.
