CHICOPEE, MA (WSHM) -

Two families are without a home Sunday night in Chicopee, following a fire at 78 Austin St. on Sunday morning.

Deputy Chief Joseph Crevier tells CBS 3 that it took firefighters approximately two hours to put out the fire.

Five people lived in the house.  Two were on the top floor, three on the bottom floor.

As of Sunday night, the cause of the fire is still under investigation, but Crevier says the results could have been a lot worse.

"Everybody got out OK, including their pet," said Crevier. "No injuries, and no injuries on our end. All firefighters are OK. So a tragedy was averted as far as any life safety, but the structure is very severely damaged."

The American Red Cross tells CBS 3 that they provided assistance to the two families, with financial resources for food and clothing.

They will follow up with the families in the coming days.
