Pope John Paul is asking kidnappers in Iraq to show humanity and release their captives. The pope says he's following the news with sadness and he prays for the families that their loved ones will be released. The pontiff made the appeal today in his weekly appearance from his window overlooking St. Peter's Square. On Friday, the papal envoy in Baghdad said John Paul is prepared to mediate, but there's been no indication that he's been invited to do so. By late last night, 15 foreigners were still missing and believed to be kidnapped. An Italian national, whose slaying was videotaped, is the only hostage known to have been killed. The hostage-taking has coincided with some of the worst violence in the US-led invasion of Iraq.
