Miami Township Cop Honored For Cracking Rape Case

The Miami Township Board of Trustees honored veteran police Detective Bill Paul for cracking the case of a child predator.

It was detective Paul's months of hard work that led to the conviction of Paul Kerry Powell. Last month, the Miami Township man was sentenced 15 to 50 years in prison for repeatedly raping his former wife's niece.

Solving this case was not easy. For starters, the victim lives in Minnesota. The crime occurred over 15 years ago. On top of that, there was no evidence.

Detective Paul says Powell raped the young girl several times over a period of several years when she visited Powell's former wife in Miami Township. Police say the abuse started around 1989.

In 2002, the victim, then 18 years old, reported the crime to police in Minnesota. The case was dropped for lack of evidence. Shortly thereafter, Miami Township police got a tip about Powell's dark past.

Powell failed three polygraph tests before he finally confessed in March. Detective Paul says the victim is now 20 and attends college.
