The Signs are Here the Cicadas Are Coming

The cicada invasion is just around the corner, and now you can start seeing the signs.  Cicada turrets are popping up on the ground.  They're little mounds that cicadas have built out of mud in response to all the recent rainfall.

"The water starts to seep in and they want to get out of that standing water, so they extend their tunnel above ground level by taking balls of mud and building up this littel tunnel or turret as they'e referred to, " says Dr. Gene Kritsky from the College of Mount St. Joe.

Once the water goes back down, so do the cicadas.  Right now, they're about three to four inches below the surface.  It will still be at least a couple weeks until the adult cicadas emerge.
