Cincinnati, OH (FOX19) - Big day for 15 young GCL athletes. Moeller High School announced on Wednesday that over a dozen of their finest athletes have committed to play their respective sports at the collegiate level. These athletes cover sports such as: football, track, baseball, golf, wrestling, lacrosse, and swimming. Here are the names, colleges, and sports of each player.
DESMOND NEWBOLD has committed to Central State University where he will play football for Coach E.J. Junior. Newbold played offensive tackle/guard for the Crusaders and will play offensive line for Central State University. Desmond has received the Iron Man award and carries a 3.0 GPA at Moeller High School. He is a member of Corryville Catholic Little Buddies. Desmond is the son of Buddy and Lenette Newbold of Loveland.
HARRISON SMITH will continue his football career at Thomas More College under the direction of Coach Jim Hilvert. Smith has played offensive line and long-snapper for the Crusaders and will continue to play on the offensive line at the next level. Harrison appeared in the East/West All-Star game. He carries a 3.6 GPA and has maintained second honors and outstanding school attendance. Smith served as a Mentor Captain. Harrison is the son of Larry and Joanne Smith of Milford.
NICK STOFKO has committed to Thomas More College where he will play football for Coach Jim Hilvert. Stofko played defensive back for Moeller and will continue at that same position for the Saints. He played both football and basketball for four years at Moeller. Nick received the "Man of Moeller" award for the 2011-2012 basketball season. Stofko carries a 3.7 GPA, received the Quiroga Service Award, served as House Captain, and was member of Vocal Ensemble. Nick is the son of Jim and Sheila Stofko of Montgomery.
DANTE WEST will continue his football career under the direction of Head Coach Regis Scafe at John Carroll University. West, named Second Team All-GCL, played both defensive line and offensive line for the Crusaders. He will play defensive line for the Blue Streaks. Dante participated in the Corryville Little Buddies program. He maintains a 3.3 GPA. Dante is the son of Dante and Daphany West of Mason.
GABE STIVER will continue as a dual-sport athlete at Mount Saint Joseph in both football and track. Stiver played linebacker for the Crusaders and will continue that position at the next level for Coach Rodney Huber. Gabe will also compete at the next level for Coach Paul Longano with track at shot put and discus. As a Crusader, Stiver averaged shot put at 52 feet and discus at 149 feet. He carried at 3.3 GPA and participated in Christmas on Campus and Little Buddies. Gabe is the son of Shawn and Lisa Stiver of Loveland.
NATE BRUNTY will continue his baseball career for Coach Joe Wilkins at Tiffin University. Brunty is a four-year member of the Moeller Baseball program. He is currently recovering from a shoulder injury and was unable to pitch this spring. Brunty carries a 3.7 GPA and has been an honor roll student all four years. Nate is the son of Tom and Lois Brunty of Morrow.
JOHN HAKEMOLLER has committed to play baseball for Coach Matt Tyner at Bellarmine University. As a 2012 member of the Crusaders, Hakemoller was 1-2 in 7.2 innings pitched this season over six appearances with an ERA of 5.48. John has struck out 10 and walked six as the closer. Hakemoller carries a 3.7 GPA and received the Ohio Award of Merit. Jon is the son of John and Sally Hakemoller of Loveland.
ZACH WILLIAMS will continue his baseball career at Bellarmine University under the direction of Coach Matt Tyner. Williams is 5-0 in 28 innings this season over six appearances with an ERA of 1.00. Zach has struck out 37 batters and walked just seven this season. He was named GCL Honorable Mention. Williams carries a 3.7 GPA and has maintained second honors. Zach is the son of Scott and Laura Williams of West Chester.
CASEY GILLIGAN has committed to play golf for Coach Brian Lane at Transylvania University. Gilligan, team captain for the Crusaders, was awarded Second Team All-GCL and City All-Star Honorable Mention. Casey has maintained a 3.4 GPA and second honors. He is a two-year member of Little Buddies and a current board member. Casey is the son of Mike and Christi Gilligan of Liberty Township.
K. MICHAEL BLUM will continue his wrestling career under the direction of Coach Tim Dernlan at Ashland University. Blum is a member of the 170 lb weight-class. Michael placed sixth in the Ironman National Wrestling tournament and is a four-time AAU All-American. He carries a 3.4 GPA and received Academic All-Ohio. Michael is the son of Kevin and Anita Blum of Montgomery.
TYLER ZIEGLER will continue his wrestling career at Gardner-Webb University under the direction of Coach Dick Wince. Ziegler is a member of the Crusaders 126 lb weight-class. In the 2011-2012 wrestling season, Ziegler placed sixth at the OHSAA State Competition, had an overall record of 85-37, and was First Team GCL. Ziegler is an honor roll student with a 3.5 GPA and a member of the Spanish Honor Society. He was also a member of Moeller's Venture Crew. Tyler is the son of Doug and Debbie Ziegler of Hamilton.
CODY ENGELHARDT has committed to play lacrosse at the University of Mount Union. Engelhardt will play under Head Coach P.J. Kavanagh. Engelhardt currently plays long stick middie for the Crusaders and will continue that position at UMU. Engelhardt carries a 3.6 GPA and is currently a member of Big Brothers, Matthew 25 Ministries, and Yearbook committee. Cody is the son of Jim and Laura Engelhardt of West Chester.
MATT KLEVER, a 2012 co-captain for the Crusaders, will continue playing lacrosse at Wittenberg University under Coach George Harris. Klever was awarded Honorable Mention for the 2011 Midwest Region. He carries a 3.6 GPA and has achieved academic honors all four years. Matt is the son of Mike and Karolyn Klever of Lebanon.
CHRISTIAN JOSEPHSON will continue to swim at Kenyon College under the direction of Coach Jessen Book. Josephson swims butterfly, distance freestyle and breaststroke. He is a 10-time National qualifier, four-time State qualifier, and two-time GCL Champion in 100 Butterfly. An honor roll student, Josephson carries a 4.0 GPA and participated in Relay for Life and Vocal Ensemble. Christian is the son of David and June Josephson of Lebanon.
