Minister-Gay Marriages

Presbyterian court says church doesn't prohibit same-sex marriages

A Presbyterian Church court says a minister did not violate church law by marrying same-sex couples. The court that oversees Presbyterian churches in Ohio and Michigan released its ruling today in favor of the Reverend Stephen Van Kuiken of Cincinnati. The permanent judicial commission of the synod for Ohio and Michigan ruled that the Presbyterian Church's constitution does not prohibit ministers from marrying same-sex couples. That reverses a lower church court's ruling a year ago against Van Kuiken when he was the minister of Mount Auburn Presbyterian Church in Cincinnati. Van Kuiken continued to marry same-sex couples, saying that he was following his conscience and the teachings of Jesus. He was ousted from the ministry in June, but was reinstated because he appealed last year's ruling against him.
