Sausage Retires

Sausage lady calls it quits

Wisconsin's most famous sausage is retiring, but she'll always relish the memories. Mandy Block is the woman in the Italian sausage costume who Pittsburgh Pirates first baseman Randall Simon hit with his bat last year. She says she's decided not to take part in the Brewers' annual sausage race this summer.

In fact she's retiring from competitive sausage racing altogether to take psychology classes at the University of Wisconsin. Block became a celebrity after the bat incident was broadcast worldwide. Simon was arrested and fined 432 dollars. Major League Baseball suspended him for three days. He apologized to Block several times though, and sent her an autographed bat.

Later Block was recognized by the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council with a certificate of bravery.
