Bush To Stand By Rumsfeld At Pentagon

Bush heads to Pentagon amid prisoner abuse scandal

President Bush's trip to the Pentagon today was scheduled before the scandal at Abu Ghraib  prison made headlines. Bush will be briefed at the Defense Department as he and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld brace for the release of more pictures and video images showing Iraqi prisoners being abused by Americans. The president says he wants Rumsfeld to stay in his Cabinet.

But a flood of criticism from Capitol Hill has some wondering whether Rumsfeld, and perhaps Joint Chiefs Chairman Richard Myers, might have to resign.

The military has announced that Specialist Jeremy Sivits of Pennsylvania will be the first soldier to face a court-martial in connection with the prisoner abuse. He will be tried May 19th in Baghdad on charges of mistreating detainees.
