Freed rapist seeks up to $800,000 from state
A rapist freed by an appeals court after serving five years heads back to court today in Akron to seek up to 800-thousand dollars from the state on a wrongful imprisonment claim. Twenty-six-year-old Nathaniel Lewis has always maintained his innocence. He was freed by a federal appeals court which agreed that the trial jury should have been allowed to see more of the victim's diary comments. At one point, the victim wrote in her diary that she regretted trying to get Lewis convicted. The prosecution says the diary entries were taken out of context. If Lewis wins a legal ruling of innocent, he can pursue a wrongful imprisonment claim against the state.
