Back to class, JCPS enacts 'Level 3' security for West Louisville schools
LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - JCPS schools in West Louisville were back in session Friday, but they were under a 'Level 3' security procedure.
A 'Level 3' policy indicates schools are operating under a heightened security level, but students are allowed to be dropped off, picked up and, at the school's discretion, allow recess.
JCPS Spokesperson Lauren Roberts said police were notified of schools holding outdoor activities and would provide additional presence, if requested. She told WAVE 3 in an e-mail it's, "purely precautionary to make folks feel safe."
'Level 3' generally means exterior access is controlled and outdoor activities are minimized, according to Roberts.
Roberts added, "We asked all schools to all be on a heightened alert as a precaution and to make staff, students and parents feel safe. It has been a smooth and quiet day."
School personnel kept in close contact with LMPD. Parents like Thomas Richie praised JCPS' response. "They did an excellent job yesterday as far as getting the students in the gym once the first shooting happened, so I'm pretty confident the staff will take care of our children," Richie said.
