Pizza Patrón defends 'Pizza, Por Favor' promotion

Posted: Updated:
LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

A pizza is big and round - eat too much and you may gain a pound. But why is pizza from Pizza  Patrón making so many Americans frown?

"Well, free pizza is great. I don't know why people would actually fight over it," said Pizza Patrón store manager Jesus Martinez.

Pizza Patrón is a bilingual business and its promotion on June 5 to give away free pies between 5 and 8 p.m. has sparked a national debate.

"People pretty much come in and have to order the pizza in Spanish and you get a free large pepperoni," Martinez said.

His store is located at E. Charleston and 28th Street.

The way to get this free pizza is not as complicated as many are making it out to be. All you have to do is walk into a Pizza Patrón, step up to the counter and say, "Pizza, por favor."

Who knew it would make so many upset?

The FOX5 Facebook page blew up with negative comments on this story.

Many we spoke with in person throughout the Valley had a completely different opinion.

"Well, you're not really speaking Spanish, you're saying one word," Johnny Leon said.

"I'm shocked with the mentality of some people because this is a nation of everybody," Louie Carras said.

"It's a promotion for everyone - Spanish, black, white, green, purple," exclaimed Luverna Fosco, who is a regular customer of Pizza Patrón.

When asked what she'll say when she enters Pizza Patron on June 5, Fosco smiled and said, "Pizza, por favor - please."

There are five Pizza Patrón locations all throughout Las Vegas. All will participate in the promotion.
