Veterans searching for missing medals may find them in Treasury vault

FRANKFORT, KY (FOX19) - Workers in the Unclaimed Property Division of the State Treasury hope to reunite veterans or their families with hundreds of unclaimed military items in the Treasury vault.

"We're searching for the rightful owners of a bronze star, seven navy medals, two purple hearts, numerous battle ribbons and campaign pins, dog tags and dozens of discharge papers including one from the Civil War!" stated Kentucky Treasurer Todd Hollenbach.

The Treasury returned purple hearts to family members of two Kentucky veterans last year with the help of the Departments of Military and Veterans Affairs.

"We owe it to our military service members to go the extra mile to return these items.  Their stories deserve to be told, and their memories need to be preserved." Hollenbach added.

If you're a veteran missing a medal or a relative looking to find a military legacy, you can visit their website and look for the Military Property Owners listing.
