HAMILTON, OH (FOX19) - A local soldier has been killed in Afghanistan.

Former Hamilton mayor Adolf Olivas says his son, Nicholas, has died.

Army Airborne Infantryman Nicholas Olivas, 20, graduated from Fairfield High School in 2010.

The Department of Defense confirmed his death on May 30th in Zharay, Afghanistan, when his unit was attacked with an IED, or improvised explosive device.

The family is traveling to Dover Air Force base on Thursday where Olivas' body will be taken.

Olivas, a 2010 graduate from Fairfield High School, leaves behind a wife, Faith, and a two-month old son, Connor. On Thursday, Olivas' friends mourned the loss of an American Hero, long-time friend Kyle Lackman says he just talked with Nick on May 15th.

"I just told him that he has so many friends and family that loved him and cared about him so much and that he had a baby to raise and that he needs to come home safe," said Lackman. "And he said he'd be home before we knew it."

The tragedy has shaken the Fairfield High School community where Olivas wrestled.

"When we have a tragedy like this we feel like we have lost one of our own," said Billy Smith, Principal at Fairfield High School. "And Nicholas was married to a Fairfield graduate as well and had a little one so it hits us pretty hard."

Funeral arrangements have not been set at this time.
