A coalition spokesman in Iraq is again denying that American civilian Nick Berg had been detained by US officials.
Berg was shown on video being beheaded by militants. There's been confusion over the time he spent in Iraq. Coalition spokesman Dan Senor says Berg had been detained for a time by Iraqi police in northern Iraq, and was "visited" by US investigators.
Senor says US officials determined he didn't pose a danger. Iraqi police had earlier denied that Berg had been in their custody. Senor says the confusion may be caused by the fact that many Iraqi detention facilities are supported in some way by American military police.
Senor says it's tough to say what could have been done to prevent Berg from being kidnapped and killed. He says terrorists are willing to go to great lengths to make a "very dreadful point."
