Athens police handed out around 100 citations for public intoxication, underage drinking and open container violations to people -- mostly Ohio University students -- attending an annual block party Saturday night. Police Chief Rick Mayer says his officers and Ohio University police got help from officers in several surrounding towns, as well as county sheriff's deputies and the state Highway Patrol. Mayer says the out-of-town officers cost Athens more than 30-thousand dollars. All the extra commotion was in connection with an annual block party along Palmer Street. Mayer says parties at four houses were declared nuisances and shut down.
