The Cincinnati Health Department has been informed by the Ohio State Department of Health that various Health Departments in the State have received calls from citizens reporting some individuals posing as government employees who are contacting local food operators.
They are identifying themselves as "health inspectors" and requesting to schedule an inspection in an attempt to collect personal information.
Scammers often attempt to collect personal information to fraudulently sell goods and services or extract money.
The Cincinnati Health Department does not call to set up food service inspections. City Health inspectors show up unannounced and wear a picture ID that identifies them as City of Cincinnati Health Department employees.
Food operators should be aware of this possible threat. Restaurant owners and food service operators should never give out personal, private or secure information to anyone without first confirming the person's identity.
If any food operators receive these fraudulent calls or are suspicious of a health inspector for any reason, they should call 513-357-7203 for verification. The City of Cincinnati licenses over 2,100 food service operations and retail food establishments each year.
