Wife Slaying

Prosecutors say burglars supported by ex-officer killed his wife

Warren County authorities say that burglars shot a woman to death at her home nine years ago after they were paid by her husband to stage a break-in. The husband -- former Springboro police officer James Barton -- was indicted last month on charges related to the 1995 shooting of his wife, 40-year-old Vickie Barton. Warren County Prosecutor Rachel Hutzel declined today to say why Barton would have paid the two burglars to stage a robbery at his Franklin Township home near Springboro. The 48-year-old Barton retired in January after 25 years with the Springboro police. He was indicted last month on charges of complicity to involuntary manslaughter, complicity to aggravated burglary and complicity to burglary. Barton has pleaded innocent. Barton is free on a 55-thousand-dollar bond. No trial date has been set.
