ELSMERE, KY (FOX19) - A man died after a shooting by a police officer early Saturday morning, but it's not clear if the death was caused by the shooting, or by a subsequent crash.

Elsmere Police say Officer David Byrd was called to Finish Line Bar & Restaurant to investigate reports of a possible DUI or underage people drinking in the parking lot.

In the parking lot, he began questioning 21-year-old Michael Godawa.

During that investigation, police say Godawa restarted his car and backed over Officer Byrd's patrol bike.

Godawa began going forward at a high rate of speed and struck Officer Byrd with his vehicle.

During his attempts to flee, police say Godawa refused commands to stop his vehicle so Officer Byrd fired one shot.

Godawa crashed into a utility police at Lytle and Dixie.

He was taken to U.C. where he was pronounced dead.

Officer Byrd, a 2 1/2 year veteran of the Elsmere Police Department, was treated and released minor injuries at St. Elizabeth Hospital Edgewood.

Officer Byrd is currently on paid, administrative leave per Elsmere Police Department protocol.

The shooting is being investigated by Erlanger police which has a cooperative agreement with Elsmere police to investigate any incidents involving the other department's police officers.
