Race fans brace for extreme heat

SPARTA, KY (FOX19) - Race fans are setting up camp in Sparta, getting ready for this weekend's races. Thousands will be dealing with what could be record temperatures.

"We brought plenty of water with us and we brought about 100 gallons with us just for the camper and lots of bottled water," said David Wallace from Caldwell County, Kentucky.

Speedway officials have been preparing for the heat, setting up dozens of cooling stations throughout the track.

"They are a misting station and gives fans an opportunity to cool down just a little bit," said Tim Bray, Kentucky Speedway spokesperson.

For the first time, fans are permitted to bring coolers to the Speedway. Fans can also catch some shade underneath the grandstands.

"If you need emergency help there are places all across the concourse at our first aid stations so that you can get help," said Bray.
