Four Indiana men have been arrested after a traffic stop revealed their involvement in a cockfighting ring.
Indiana State Police troopers observed a Honda Accord and Honda Odyssey van traveling together on Interstate 74 in Dearborn County Friday afternoon and stopped them for minor traffic violations.
The troopers discovered that the van contained 21 rosters and the car contained various items of paraphernalia commonly associated with cockfighting. Investigation revealed that the two vehicles and the occupants were en route to Lexington, Ky., where the roosters were going to be sold for the purpose of a cockfighting contest that was going to take place later that evening.
Police arrested Jesus Behena Reyes, 28, Vidal Sanchez, 45, David Sanchez, 43 and Frederico Rojas, 27, all of Lafayette, Ind. on 21 counts of conspiracy to possess a fighting animal and one count of possession of fighting animal paraphernalia. They were taken to the Dearborn County Law Enforcement Center.
Three juveniles who were traveling with them were released to fifth adult, who was not charged.
The roosters were turned over to Dearborn County Animal Control.
