Grief counselors on hand for classmates of kids killed in Dundee

DUNDEE, OR (KPTV) -

Grief counselors will be on-hand Friday for the classmates of two children found shot to death in a murder-suicide at a Dundee home.

The children and their parents were found dead from gunshot wounds after police were called to the home on the Fourth of July.

The discovery was made at about 5 p.m. at the home on Southwest Charles Street, near the intersection of Southwest 11th Street, after police were made aware of a post on Facebook by 37-year-old Randall Engels.

Fox 12 found Engels' last Facebook post, made Wednesday afternoon, which read, "If she's gone, I can't go on."

Police said they were called shortly after that to check on the family's home. They had to force their way in because all doors were locked.

Inside the house, police said they found the bodies of Engels, his wife, 35-year-old Amy Engels, and their children, who neighbors identified as Jackson and Bailey.

Detectives believe Randall Engels shot his wife and two kids before turning the gun on himself.

Police aren't revealing a possible motive, but court records show either Randall or Amy Engels had filed for divorce recently.

However, neighbors who saw Randall as recently as yesterday told Fox 12 everything seemed normal in the hours leading up to the tragedy.

"(He said) just 'Good morning; did you get the day off?'" said next door neighbor Marissa Briley, who briefly spoke to him on July 4. "Just casual talk."

"They were a really, really close family, you always saw them together," said Briley.

"I feel like I've been punched in the stomach," said Dundee Mayor Ted Crawford, who knew Engels because he worked with the city on the budget committee from 2002 to December 2011.

"He was a very productive member of the committee in my opinion," said Crawford.

Engels also unsuccessfully ran for city council in 2008. Neighbors said he also used to own Dundee Pizza Company, which is now closed.

"Your mind keeps saying, 'why, why did you have to involve the children?," said Crawford. "(It's a) terrible tragic thing that's going to stick with this town for a while."

Neighbors said the children had just finished fifth and seventh grades. Grief counselors will be at Dundee Elementary and Chehalem Valley Middle School on Friday.

"He was always happy and had a lot of friends," said 9-year-old Lucas Hill, who went to school with Jackson.

Hill's mother, Cathy, said she asked her son if he wanted to go see a counselor at his school, but he said he was fine.

"I don't think it has quite sunk in, the reality of everything, so he's feeling OK with it right now," said Cathy Hill.

Dundee is a small town in Oregon's wine country located 30 miles southwest of Portland. Neighbors said crime activity in the area is rare.

"It's nerve-wracking because you just don't get that around here. People barbecue and get together, and everybody helps everybody out," said neighbor Kevin Ullom.

Tavia Surratt, who knew the victim, said friends and family still have questions.

"I'm sitting here thinking about it all day like a movie in my head. How did it happen? Did the kids see something and try to go get help? And nobody will know," she said.

A memorial for the family continues to grow outside the home where the killings happened.

Officers from the Newberg-Dundee Police Department, investigators from the Yamhill County Sheriff's Office and officials from the Yamhill County District Attorney's Office continue to investigate the deaths.
