RED SPRINGS, TX (KLTV) -

The Red Springs Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene of a grass fire that spread to a home on Friday afternoon.

At 2:48, crews were dispatched to the 1700 block of Montgomery Gardens in the Red Springs area for reports of thick black smoke.

One structure, a shed that was converted into an apartment, is nearly completely destroyed.

At least two other structures were threatened, but crews were able to contain the fire before it reached that far.

Neighbors reported that the fire started in the storage part of the shed, then spread to the apartment side and out to the grass.

But, the Smith County Fire Marshal says there was a large burn pile in the back yard that was completely burned through. Officials believe that's where the fire started.

No one was home at the time of the fire.

Dixie and Lindale Volunteer Fire Departments were called in to assist.

The fire is still under investigation.
