Local Marine surprises grandma

A local soldier surprised his grandmother Friday as he came home from what is most likely his last tour in Afghanistan.

Corporal Christopher Smith dressed as a Red Robin server and surprised his grandma Janet who did not know he was back in Cincinnati.

Smith has served in the United States Marine Corps as a structural mechanic for nearly six years, and has spent three tours of duty overseas including one in Iraq and two in Afghanistan.

His most recent tour of Afghanistan, which lasted about seven months, marks the end of his active service although he could be called up from the reserves at any time.

Smith's grandma, Janet Kuhn, is certainly not mad about the trick her family played on her, saying, "It's okay, that he's here, everything is fine, it makes it all alright."

"His grandma is his biggest fan and she sent him a lot of presents while he was deployed and I figured she was the one who needed to be surprised," said Chris' father Phil Smith, who orchestrated the reunion.

The family is thankful Chris is home safe and look forward to the happy memories that will be made in the future.

"To see him is just unbelievable, so thankful," said Kuhn.
