A Cincinnati teen has died after a possible drowning incident while on a family rafting trip in Franklin County, IN.

The family took a break from rafting to go swimming on the Whitewater River when Shontel Wagoner-Dugar, 15, started to struggle, went under the water and didn't surface near Cedar Grove.

The Franklin County Sheriff's Department received a report of a teen missing in a rural area of Whitewater River around 1 p.m. Emergency response crews arrived and conducted a search of the river downstream of the State Road 1 bridge. The teen's body was recovered around 2:40 p.m.

Franklin County Sheriff's Department, Cedar Grove Fire Department, New Trenton Fire Department, Brookville Fire Department, Dearborn County Water Rescue, Franklin County EMS, Rescue 24, Indiana State Police, Franklin County Coroner and Indiana Conservation Officers responded to the scene.

The Department of Natural Resources would like to remind people in the hot weather to make sure you are wearing a life jacket, even if you are a strong swimmer, because the hot weather drains your energy level.
