CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

Cincinnati Mayor Mark Mallory says he is working to have Congressman Steve Chabot's anti-streetcar language removed from the Federal Transportation Bill.

Chabot inserted an amendment to the bill that would prohibit any federal transportation dollars from being used for the Cincinnati streetcar project. It was passed after a debate on the House Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act of 2013, but still must pass the Senate.

"This is nothing but a political stunt," Mayor Mark Mallory said.  "The record is clear.  Chabot opposes the Streetcar.  But, the voters told us to move forward on this project.  People are tired of the same old ‘we can't' attitude.  That is not how we operate in Cincinnati anymore.  We work on big projects and we get them done."

Mayor Mallory is contacting legislative leaders in both the House and Senate and he is making calls to the White House to have the language removed.

The amendment (CLICK TO READ) would stop the federal grant money sought by the city of Cincinnati for the streetcar project.  The primary funding for this project came in the form of an Urban Circulator Grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation for $25 million. Some city officials have been asking for more federal assistance.

Chabot said he wanted the funding to go to other projects, such as the Brent Spence Bridge and the I-71 MLK interchange.

"Representative Chabot says that we should be investing in the Brent Spence Bridge and a new interchange on I-71 at MLK. I couldn't agree more. So, where is Steve Chabot's leadership on getting that funding for our community?  It isn't there," Mayor Mallory said.
