Votto undergoes surgery; sidelined 3-4 weeks

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

The Reds will have to try to hold onto first place in the National League Central without Joey Votto after confirming that he will have surgery on his knee.

An M.R.I. detected torn cartilage in Votto's left knee that will require surgery on Tuesday and is expected to sideline him three to four weeks.

The Reds learned about Votto as the game was starting on Monday night. He hurt himself sliding June 29, but kept playing. He started for the N.L. in the All-Star Game and played all three games of a sweep over the St. Louis Cardinals that left Cincinnati leading the division.

"Joey Votto met with the medical staff this evening and has been diagnosed with a torn meniscus in his left knee. He is going to have arthroscopic surgery tomorrow and should miss 3 to 4 weeks. Joey is very comfortable with the decision and is eager to return to the lineup," said Reds President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Walt Jocketty in a statement.

"It is in my best interest and in the best interest of the team to do it now so that I can be healthy during the last two months of the pennant race," said Votto.

Votto is the Reds' top hitter, is batting .342 and led the National League. in doubles, walks and extra-base hits.
