Neighbor alerts family to fire

WESTWOOD, OH (FOX19) - A neighbor alerted a Westwood family to a fire at their home Monday morning.

The fire broke out at about 1:30 a.m. in the 2700 block of Robert Avenue.

Upon arrival, fire companies reported a working fire in the basement of a 2-story wood frame residence with smoke and fire showing from the basement windows.

All occupants had escaped prior to the arrival of fire companies after being awoken by a neighbor.

Firefighters aggressively attacked the fire, searched the building and extinguished the fire, remaining on scene for about two hours.

The cause is under investigation. Damage to the structure and contents is estimated to be $25,000.  There were smoke detectors present in the home, but they were inoperable. Five adults and one child are being assisted by the Red Cross.
