Construction Zones

Drivers causing death or injury in construction zone face fines, jail

Starting today, drivers face fines or jail if they injure or kill someone in a construction zone in Ohio. Governor Taft signed the law today at the Department of Transportation's sign-painting facility. The law requires signs to be posted in construction zones to warn drivers of the new law. The increased penalties also apply to repeat drunk drivers and to motorists who kill or injure law enforcement officers anywhere on the road. Troopers say more drivers are ignoring the state law to pull over to the center or left lane when a patrol car is stopped on the right shoulder.

Because of the string of highway shootings in and near Columbus, Republican Representative Jim Hughes also inserted a provision in his bill that increases the penalties for firing a gun at a roadway.
