INSIDER: 'Idol' chasing Brad Paisley

(CNN) - Is American Idol going a little bit country?

After inking pop superstar Mariah Carey to fill one of its vacant judge's chairs, American Idol producers may have their sights set on one of country music's biggest stars.

Brad Paisley is reportedly being courted to join the Idol judging team.

One insider says that bringing in a country star as a judge makes perfect sense since the show's most successful winner to date, Carrie Underwood, is a country singer.

Paisley is one of the most successful male stars in country music, and is the 2008 CMA and ACM Male Vocalist of the Year winner.

Paisley has performed on Idol in the past, and has relationships with Underwood as well as past Idol winner, Scotty McCreery.

He has toured with McCreery and recorded the hit "Remind Me" with Underwood. Both Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez recently announced they wouldn't be back as judges.

Randy Jackson is believed to be returning.
